Learn the mechanics of drafting Bills of Costs and how to make good use of the Supreme Court of BC Civil Rules of Court.

The course materials which sets out the learning outcomes, pre-course and in-class activities is currently being updated.

At the end of your course, you will:

  1. Explain how the principle of proportionality is reflected in Rule 14-1.
  2. Gain an understanding of Rule 14-1 Costs and how and when costs are applied.
  3. Understand the different tariff items set out in Appendix B and the value of units.
  4. Understand what disbursements are allowed by the registrar to be claimed on a Bill of Costs.
  5. Demonstrate an ability to prepare a simple Bill of Costs.
  6. Describe what needs to be prepared for an assessment before the registrar of a Bill of Costs or determination of solicitor/client costs.
  7. Demonstrate how to plan ahead in preparing Bills of Costs.

This course will provide you with 7.0 CPD hours with 0.0 hours in professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, or practice management.

Each full day session offers:

  • an interactive class providing hands-on practice in preparing Form 62 Bill of Costs;
  • a limit of 14 participants, to ensure optimum learning;
  • printed and digital versions of the Desk Reference Manual, including useful checklists, flowcharts and precedents.
