As China continues its remarkable rise in global trade, law firms in Vancouver are looking for effective ways to provide legal services to the growing population of Chinese who come to do business or to live here.

The rules for practice development are the same: from introducing yourself, succinctly describing your practice area, arranging to meet, to surviving the first meeting (yes, including ordering meals); the ability to communicate clearly is expected; except there are cultural nuances to be mindful of.

Lawyers who have been raised in a Chinese environment believe that their knowledge of law when combined with a better command of Mandarin will give them a marked competitive advantage. But recognizing a word or two will not be enough, and more so where there is a lot riding on a client matter. Sophisticated clients will select their counsel who they can confide in knowing that nothing will get lost in translation.

关系:Being understood engenders trust and credibility making relationship building easier. For the Chinese, it is all about relationships.

But like any other language proficiency and confidence comes from: practice, practice, and more practice.
