Description:

This two-day boot camp is designed to help the learner to move into the family litigation practice area so that they can acquaint themselves with the Supreme Court of BC Family Rules, to sharpen their skills, or to freshen up on specific procedures. As an added feature, you can ask any questions that you have always wanted to know, but were afraid to ask at work!

What is the scope of the course?

• understand how the presence of self-represented litigants have impacted family law litigation

• overview of procedures for commencing a family litigation action in the Supreme Court of BC

• master the calculation of time, due dates, and various types of service

• learn the basics of drafting pleadings

• learn the basics of JCCs, evidence, disclosure and information-gathering

• know the SCBC Rules of Court – essential to understanding procedural civil litigation

• obtain an overview of the Forms and Appendices in the Rules of Court

• learn the basics of the production of List of Documents

• learn the mechanics of interlocutory applications to obtain Orders other than at trial

• learn the fundamentals of the discovery procedures

• learn the basics of court ordered reports  and expert witnesses

• appreciate the keys to trial preparation: organizing from pre-trial considerations to trial preparation

• an overview of preparing Bills of Costs

• explain solicitor client privilege
