This course provides participants with an overview of human resources within the legal industry. This workshop targets 2 key efforts: recruitment and retention, and how they intersect to help achieve law firm strategic goals. Included are best practices of critical human resources functions, including preparing to comply with firm regulation. Case studies augment learning to gain a deeper understanding of the efforts required to elevate HR in your firm. The takeaway: the "new" HR improves firm value and assists to drive law firm business results.

Who Should Come:

This course is designed for lawyers and professionals new to law firm HR, those considering a career change into HR, as well as managers and leaders in law firms who seek to gain breadth in their HR knowledge.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of your studies with us, you should be able to:

1. Relate the importance of the law firm workforce and HR’s role optimizing it;

2. Develop HR best practices in advance of the Law Society of BC’s Firm Regulation rules;

3. Create a recruiting policy that guides effective hiring; and 

4. Create a retention policy that adds value to your firm’s strategic plan.
