Diversity Dialogue Series:

Eliminating Bias In Your Writing  (BIAS 101)

In this workshop you will practice ways to:
  • Clarify your intent
  • Respect your reader
  • Avoid expression of bias
Obvious bias may be easy to spot but not so easy to get around. This session reviews best practices for eliminating the usual grammatical forms of biased language: gender, sexism, and racism.

Implicit bias can be difficult to spot, especially when it is a component of systemic discrimination. This session will define systemic discrimination and help you recognize when it sneaks into your writing style.

Learn to recognize communication hurdles that create barriers between you and your reader. You will also consider how your tone may indicate bias and ways to improve tone.

Cheryl Stephens, a consultant at Plain Language Wizardry, is a former lawyer with 25 years experience in professional communications and training.

Choose from two sessions: 3:00 or 5:30 pm
